Shumaker Loop & Kendrick is seeking a highly motivated Medical Malpractice Litigation Associate with a minimum of four years of defense experience to join our team in Charlotte, North Carolina.
This position offers the opportunity to work alongside a nationally recognized team representing physicians, hospitals, health systems, advanced practice providers, nurses, nursing homes, and other health care professionals in complex medical malpractice and professional liability matters. Our attorneys regularly defend high-exposure claims involving wrongful death, catastrophic injury, and allegations of medical negligence across a broad range of medical specialties
Where You’ll Work
This role is based out of our Charlotte, NC, office. We are open to a hybrid work arrangement; however, the successful candidate must be able to periodically work from the Charlotte office for client meetings, trainings, team collaboration, and other business-related purposes as needed.
What You’ll Do
  • Defend health care providers and institutions in medical malpractice and professional liability litigation
  • Assist with cases through all phases of litigation, including pleadings, discovery, depositions, motion practice, mediation, and trial
  • Analyze medical records and work closely with expert witnesses and consulting physicians
  • Draft persuasive motions, briefs, and other litigation-related documents
  • Participate in witness preparation, expert development, hearings, mediations, and trials
  • Collaborate with clients, insurers, risk management professionals, and health care administrators to develop strategic defense plans
  • Assist in responding to regulatory investigations and professional licensing matters
  • Provide practical, business-focused counsel while helping clients protect their professional reputations and navigate complex legal challenges
  • Work closely with senior attorneys on case strategy and litigation management
  • Manage caseload efficiently while meeting litigation deadlines and billable requirements
What We’re Looking For
  • Juris Doctor degree from an ABA accredited law school and active membership in good standing with the North Carolina Bar (or the ability to waive in)
  • A minimum of 4 years of litigation experience – medical malpractice or liability defense experience is preferred, but not required
  • Strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills including a strong aptitude for managing and prioritizing multiple projects and deadlines
  • Comfortable handling depositions and court appearances commensurate with experience
  • A thorough knowledge and understanding of local, state and federal rules of procedure
  • Ability to work with a variety of attorneys and staff, and maintain a high degree of confidentiality

Physical Requirements
  • Sitting frequently, approximately six out of eight hours per day. Sitting position static for up to one-half hour at a time.
  • Standing or walking frequently, up to six hours per day.
  • Lifting and carrying up to 20 pounds occasionally, up to one hour per day.
  • Bending and stooping occasionally, up to one-half hour per day.
