Shumaker is seeking a litigation attorney to join our team in the Toledo or Columbus office.

Candidates must have at least 3 years of general litigation experience and be able to work independently on business disputes, including contract, insurance coverage, real estate, franchise, and regulatory litigation cases. Commercial litigation and/or employment litigation experience is strongly preferred.

Candidates should have strong writing skills and be knowledgeable about the lifecycle of litigation, including being able to draft pleadings and motions, being proactive and responsive to deadlines, participate in depositions and hearings, and feel confident working independently and with attorneys and staff across offices on complex cases.

Where You'll Work
This attorney will work in our Toledo or Columbus Ohio office, or hybrid within the regional area. While the position can be primarily remote, we will require travel to the Toledo or Columbus office (depending on candidate’s location) 2-3 times per month for in-person collaboration and connection. This allows us to maintain a strong team culture while offering flexibility in where you work day-to-day.
What You'll Do
  • Litigate commercial disputes from inception through resolution
  • Draft pleadings, motions, discovery, and legal memoranda
  • Take and defend depositions
  • Prepare for and handle or participate in hearings, mediations, and trials
  • Work closely with senior attorneys on case strategy and litigation management
  • Communicate with clients, experts, and opposing counsel
  • Manage caseload efficiently while meeting litigation deadlines and billable requirements
What We're Looking For
  • Minimum 3+ years of commercial litigation experience required
  • Employment Litigation experience is a plus, but not required
  • Juris Doctor degree from an ABA accredited law school
  • Active Ohio bar license required
  • Active Michigan bar license a plus
  • Candidates who have more than six years of commercial litigation or employment experience, or who looking for a reduced billable workload, are encouraged to apply and will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Physical Requirements:
  • Sitting position static for up to one-half hour at a time
  • Lifting and carrying up to 20 pounds occasionally, up to one hour per day
  • Bending and stooping occasionally, up to one-half hour per day
